Erika’s customized chucks are the smoking gun that proves this corpse is hers.
What awaits us beyond this fragile mortal coil? Is there an afterlife? Will we ever see our loved ones again? Is it possible for souls to be tethered to the Earth, stuck in an endless purgatory? The 2022 Netflix comedy miniseries Boo, Bitch probably is not going to answer any of these serious and existential questions, but it can make the idea of dying a bit funny. The series stars Lana Condor, Zoe Colletti, Mason Versaw, Aparna Brielle, Tenzing Norgay Trainor, Cathy Vu, and John Brantley Cole and premiered on Netflix on July 8, 2022.
Erika also wears yellow high top chucks in this series.
Erika Vu (Condor) may be the most unpopular senior at her school. She is about to graduate and no one outside her childhood best friend, Gia (Colletti), knows her name. Most people have been calling her “Helen Who” for her entire high school life. With graduation quickly coming up, the two besties decide they want to do some actual living before they go to college and they think the best way to do this is by attending a huge senior party. At said party, school heart-throb Jake C. (Versaw) breaks up with his on-off girlfriend Riley (Brielle), while Erika and Gia drink for the first time. Now sufficiently buzzed, the two try to get closer to their crushes, Jake C. and Jake W., by totally owning the party. Erika shows off her personality and how awesome she is, which catches Jake C.’s eye. The girls head home after an epic night and try to plan their next move when suddenly a semi-truck barrels right towards them. They wake up the next morning hungover, unable to remember how they got home. Returning to the scene, they are shocked to see a corpse resting under a moose. While that is shocking on its own, the true horror is that the corpse is wearing Erika’s chucks.
Erika’s chucks when they had a little more… life to them.
Once the shock wears off, Erika concludes that she died last night and is now a ghost. She regrets not living her life to the fullest before her death, and she and Gia both wonder why she is still here. They learn that she can tamper with electronic devices and brings a cold chill with her wherever she goes. They then go to a meeting with the Afterlifers, a group of teens interested in the paranormal, who suggest that ghosts exist when they have unfinished business in their mortal lives. Erika believes that her unfinished business is to kiss Jake C., so she and Gia make it their mission to get the two of them kissing so Erika can finally rest in peace.
Gia and Erika arrive at the party that they hope will change their lives.
While there is a spooky premise with the mysterious death and ghosts, this movie is, at its core, a friendship film. It really lives and dies (no pun intended) with the friendship between Erika and Gia as their interactions drive everything forward. This is also where the series shines and has its best moments when Lana Condor and Zoe Colletti share a scene together. Lana is endlessly likable in this series, which will come as no surprise to anyone who has seen her in the To All the Boys film series. However, she is still standout and consistently carries the show on her back. The rest of the high school elements are pretty by the book and are totally forgettable, but service the plot and story fine. This show is only eight half-hour episodes long so it is something you could binge in a single night in time for Halloween for a spooky vibe with good friends.
Where else do you find answers about ghosts if not the graveyard?
