Being a celebrity has got to be great, right? To achieve everything you’ve ever dreamed of while performing in front of millions of people has to be great, right? To make music with the artists you’ve looked up to while people from all over the world relate to what you’re saying has to be great…right? It turns out there are far more pitfalls to being a star than you may imagine, especially when you’re a neurotic rapper in your late twenties. Dave is an American television sitcom that premiered on FXX on March 4th, 2020. It was co-created by rapper/comedian Dave Burd (aka Lil Dicky), and Jeff Schaffer. The series stars Burd, Taylor Misiak, GaTa, Andrew Santino, Travis Bennett, and Christine Ko, and just concluded its third and possibly final season in 2023.

Dave follows the life and times of Dave Burd, an aspiring rapper going by the name of Lil Dicky. Dave has gone viral a few times but he has yet to truly get his big break. His music is very comedic, but Dicky considers himself to be one of the best rappers going purely on his technical ability and that is what he wants to showcase. He lives in Los Angeles with his friend Mike (Santino) and girlfriend Ally (Misiak). He sneaks into recording sessions with his childhood friend Elz (Bennett), who produces music for other rappers, and one day while visiting the studio, he meets GaTa, a struggling rapper and former hype-man for YG. GaTa is from South LA and always unabashedly himself, wearing various pairs of chucks and trying to make his own way in the world. GaTa is also a fan of Lil Dicky and says he can get him in the studio with YG. Dicky is able to impress YG with an amazing freestyle and he goes viral again. This sets up Dave’s journey through Season 1 as he reaches new milestones like his first live performance, opening for Meek Mill, and appearing on The Breakfast Club.

The second season sees Dave and the gang navigating his new level of fame. Now signed to a label, Dave is expected to produce his debut album, Penith. However, he struggles with his art and his status as a celebrity. His quest for perfection also holds him back, professionally and personally, as he alienates some of his friends and Ally. This season ends with Dave taking that next step and showing the world who he truly is at the MTV VMAs. Finally, in Season 3, Dave and the gang head out on tour as his life gets even more crazy. He struggles again with expectations, perfectionism, and his greatest challenge: finding love. The series finale sees Dave go through something life-changing that has him seeing things clearly on the other side.

This show is really impressive as a fan of Lil Dicky as getting to see his story be told through three seasons of television is an impressive feat. The blend of real elements of his life and fictionalized elements is really good as well, but perhaps the most impressive aspect of the show is the character of Lil Dicky himself. Dave crafting a version of himself that is not very flattering is a brave choice, but it serves the show so well. Lil Dicky is really only ever held back by himself and his issues with perfection, neurosis, and narcissism. He is extremely talented but he is not a likeable character and that is what keeps him from reaching his full potential. This is all the more impressive when you see that real-life Dave is a pretty likable and genuine guy. It may be a hard show for some to watch because Dave is not always a likable protagonist. He is going to do a lot of bad things that will make you mad and leave you disappointed. The rest of the performances in the show are amazing, with GaTa, Santino, and Misiak all being highlights. The show's guest star list is also very fun and the guests that stick around never feel out of place. This a show that is fun to binge watch with its blend of comedy and serious moments of introspection.
