You never forget your first love. It is special and usually very formative for the rest of your life and how you approach romantic relationships. However, what happens when a first love scars you to the point where you think you are now unworthy of love? Every Year After is an American romantic drama TV series, based on the book Every Summer After by Carley Fortune. The series stars Sadie Soverall, Matt Cornett, Michael Bradway, Abigail Cowen, Aurora Perrineau, Joseph Chiu, and Elisha Cuthbert. It was released on Amazon Prime Video on June 10, 2026, and was immediately renewed for a second season.

In Seattle 2026, Percy Fraser (Soverall) attends the engagement party for her friends, Chantal (Perrineau) and Drew. She then goes home to hook up with her friend-with-benefits, as she feels she does not deserve a “real relationship”. She gets a call from an old friend, Charlie (Bradway), who calls to let her know that his mother, Sue (Cuthbert), has died and asks her to come to her funeral. The show then cuts back to 2011and shows a young Percy when she first arrived in the small town of Barry’s Bay, British Columbia, Canada. Soverall also plays the younger version of Percy, and the show displays this through her lack of makeup, different hairstyle, and wardrobe of chucks and shorts, as opposed to her more adult outfits in 2026. Percy meets Charlie and his younger brother, Sam (Cornett), this summer, and quickly grows close to the brothers and Sue.

Eventually, in 2016, Percy ends up in a very deep, emotional relationship with Sam, but leaves Barry’s Bay and the Floreks for good for reasons unknown. Back in 2026, Percy returns to Barry’s Bay for the first time in ten years, and tries to avoid seeing Sam, due to something that happened between them. Sam’s best friend, Jordie (Chiu), and Percy’s former best friend, Delilah (Cowen), are both unhappy to see her return due to whatever happened a decade ago. Sam is now a doctor, and when he finds out that Charlie invited Percy, the two get into a fight. Percy finally sees Sam again, and the two have a romantic moment, until Sam’s girlfriend, Taylor, comes in. Will they rekindle their love, or will their complicated past and who they are now prevent them from moving forward?

The big reveal of what Percy did is very drawn out, and this somewhat hurts the character development. Everyone in the town, from the brothers to Delilah, act like she was a monster who should have never returned, when in actuality, neither Sam nor Delilah knew what Percy did and just assumed she ghosted everyone. Also, the only reason why Percy has sex with Charlie is that Sam broke up with her yet again. Sam is the actual reason why Percy has such a harsh perception of herself because he continuously pushed her away, yet the show keeps framing him as this “great guy.” He’s a manipulator masquerading as a good guy, and while Percy makes some questionable choices, we see that she is a genuinely good person who deserves better. Sadie Soverall is the highlight of the show, and she makes Percy very endearing as both a child and an adult. Playing both roles, she also manages to really nail the growth of the character, making her feel all the more real. It will be interesting to see how Season Two develops the characters and whether or not the issues with Sam are addressed in greater detail.
