Stevie wears these chucks in the climax of the film.
The slasher genre has been a staple of horror films for over sixty years now. The plotline of a killer or a group of killers stalking and murdering a group of people using some sort of blade became such a well-known trope that the genre became self-referential in the 1990s, with films like New Nightmare and Scream reviving and reigniting the genre. I Know What You Did Last Summer (1997) was a key part of this era and is a cult classic, which means it was destined for the reboot/sequel treatment. I Know What You Did Last Summer is a 2025 American slasher film that is the fourth installment in the I Know What You Did Last Summer franchise and a sequel to I Still Know What You Did Last Summer (1998). The film stars Madelyn Cline, Chase Sui Wonders, Jonah Hauer-King, Tyriq Withers, Sarah Pidgeon, Billy Campbell, Gabbriette Bechtel, Freddie Prinze Jr., and Jennifer Love Hewitt, and was released on July 18th, 2025.

The girls run to the safety of the yacht.
The film takes place 27 years after the Tower Bay murders in the second film. On July 4th, 2024, Ava Brucks (Wonders) visits her hometown of Southport, North Carolina, for her best friend Danica Richards' (Cline) engagement party. While there, Ava, Danica, Ava's ex-boyfriend Milo Griffin (Hauer-King), and Danica's fiancé, Teddy Spencer (Withers), drive to see the big Fourth of July fireworks. They bring along their estranged friend Stevie Ward (Pidgeon), who is fresh out of drug rehab. While parked on a winding cliffside road, Teddy causes a truck driven by Sam Cooper to swerve off the cliff, killing him. Teddy swears the group to secrecy; his politician father, Grant (Campbell), covers up the accident. This causes him and Danica to break up and the group goes their separate ways with their dark secret.

Stevie goes in for the kill on Danica.
A year later, Ava returns home for yet another bridal shower for Danica’s wedding to new fiancé Wyatt. While home, Ava meets true crime podcaster Tyler Trevino (Bechtel), who is in Southport to research the killing spree conducted by fisherman Ben Willis in 1997. At the party, Danica receives a note reading, “I know what you did last summer”, and later that night Wyatt is hacked to death by a hook-wielding fisherman who resembles the now-deceased Ben. Ava meets with Tyler, who shows her where Ben Willis murdered sisters Elsa and Helen Shivers in 1997. This investigation is cut short when the new Fisherman ambushes them, brutally killing Tyler. Ava manages to wound the attacker and escape. Thinking this is the same killer from all those years ago, the group turns to original survivor Julie James (Hewitt) for help. However, after hearing their story, Julie thinks that the new Fisherman’s latest rampage is driven by a personal connection to Sam. Will the group solve the mystery of who this new killer is and if they do, how many of them will have to die in the process?

Killer chucks.
If you loved the original I Know What You Did Last Summer, then you’ll likely enjoy this film as well since it is more or less the same thing. The setup, villain, twists, and kills are all very much in a similar vein to the original film. Chase Sui Wonders and Madelyn Cline are a great final girl pair, and you buy their friendship throughout the film. The moment they have at the end before credits role is also very endearing. Sarah Pidegeon goes full slasher villain in the final act and nails the craziness needed for the twist. Overall, the film is a fun and easy watch and a good add to the Halloween horror film watchlist.

Splish splash.

These chucks start off a huge reveal.
The best chucks scene in the film (spoiler alert!) is the scene the entire film is building up to: the reveal of the killer. After some classic slasher film misdirection, the killer is revealed to be Stevie. After the murders of Teddy and Milo, the Danica, Ava, and Stevie run to the safety of Teddy’s yacht. Stevie has been wearing chucks for the last act of the film, and when the killer steps out wearing those same chucks, the audience immediately knows who it is. The visual of the iconic Fisherman costume with chucks is a cool sight, but Stevie ditches the costume because it’s too hot to chase Ava and Danica. She chases them around the boat in her chucks, in what is a frantic slasher scene filled with monologues, twists, and a final kill or two.
