People often think that all you need in order to have a successful relationship is love. The love between you and your partner is what matters and will carry you to your happily ever after. However, what they don’t warn you about is the obstacles that will stand in your way, especially that those obstacles may take the form of the ones you love most. Nobody Wants This is an American romantic comedy television series created by Erin Foster that premiered on Netflix on September 26th, 2024. The series stars Kristen Bell, Adam Brody, Justine Lupe, Timothy Simons, Stephanie Faracy, Sherry Cola, Tovah Feldshuh, Paul Ben-Victor, Jackie Tohn, and Emily Arlook. In a surprising move given Netflix’s recent track record, Season 2 has already been greenlit.

Sibling arguments can get complicated especially when you host a podcast together.

In Los Angeles, Joanne (Bell) is a typical chucks-wearing girl who hosts a dating, sex, and life podcast with her sister Morgan (Lupe). It is a big time in their lives as they are reaching a huge audience and nearing a massive deal with Spotify. However, not all is well for Joanne as she is perpetually single, only finding terrible hookups and loser men. While this provides terrific content for the podcast, it has left her yearning for much much more. This along with the general craziness in her life has her spinning her wheels and hitting a wall. She’s always been cynical and a bit of a wild card, but the idea of finding “the one” is starting to appeal to her more and more.

Joanne and Noah have amazing chemistry.

Elsewhere in LA, Noah (Brody) is a rabbi in a long-term relationship with his girlfriend Rebecca (Arlook). They are on track to be engaged, so much so that Noah has a ring hidden in his dresser. However, Rebecca finds it and says yes before he can propose. Noah tells her that he hadn’t proposed because he doesn’t think he loves her and that isn’t what he wants in life. This breakup greatly upsets his family as they love Rebecca and think she is the perfect Jewish girl for him. This also affects his work life as a rabbi and a leader in his tight-knit community when everyone begins to question his love life and choices. The only support he gets is from his affable brother Sasha (Simmons), but even that is marred because Sasha’s wife, Easther (Tohn), is best friends with Rebecca and is very mad at him. Noah tries to take his mind off of everything going on in his life by going to a party hosted by his friend Ashley (Cola). The very same Ashley who is also friends with Joanne who is also at this party. The two meet and sparks immediately fly as they are drawn together. However, with him being a rabbi and her being a non-Jewish agnostic, their potential romance is full of red flags. Nobody wants this except for them, but will that be enough for love to win?

Nothing better to start the day than a food truck bagel.

Like any good rom-com, this show lives and dies by the couple at the center of it. Luckily, they cast Kristen Bell and Adam Brody as the leads and they are always fantastic. Kristen Bell has always had an amazing ability to portray a woman who is a little bit of a scumbag but is still loveable. While Joanne is a little scummy and a bit of a failure to launch, she never gets to Elenor Shellstrop levels. Bell injects so much life and wit into the character while having a romantic heart hiding down below. Adam Brody carries his half of the romance with great care as well, portraying Noah as a humble, endearing, and truly caring person who wrestles with the tough choices in his life with lots of thought. These two have incredible and effortless chemistry that makes you believe that two people from completely different worlds are perfect for each other. It just feels real when they embrace and that's all anyone wants from a rom-com. The rest of the cast is also great at adding humor and drama to the romance when called upon. This show is an incredibly easy watch, and with the way Season 1 ends fans will be very eager to see what lies ahead for Joanne and Noah.
