Joel works on Ed’s injured foot while Maurice looks on.
This drama set in the small town of Cicely, Alaska was about Joel Fleischman (Rob Morrow), a doctor from New York City who had agreed to spend four years working in Alaska in exchange for a medical school scholarship at Columbia University. A lifetime New Yorker, Joel was not prepared initially to live in such an isolated place. Cicely was filled with interesting characters including Maurice Minnifield (Barry Corbin), Cicely’s leading citizen and former astronaut, Maggie O’Connell (Janine Turner), an air taxi pilot who owned the cabin Joel lived in, and gradaully become romantically involved with Joel, Holling (John Cullum), an adventurer and owner of the local tavern, and Ruth-Anne (Peg Phillips) who ran the town’s general store.
Joel tells Ed that he won’t be able to play basketball for a while.
Ed Chigliak (Darren Burrows), a young Native American, wore black Converse Chuck Taylor high tops most of the time, weather permitting. Ed would assist many of the other characters, like Maurice or Ruth Ann, for employment. Ed was fascinated with film making and wanted to become a film producer. One episode deals with his fantasies in imaging what it would be like to get a lifetime achivement award at the Oscars or having a conversation with Federico Fellini about film making. There were often beautifully shot scenes of Ed wandering around the town or in the country wearing his chucks.
Ed shoots some film footage on Main Street.
