Kamala Khan is back in her super red chucks!.
They say “don’t meet your heroes” but what about when you are the biggest super-hero nerd in the Marvel Universe and your hero is one of the universe’s greatest heroes? Kamala Khan is the answer to that saying and she is here to prove that meeting your heroes can be awesome. The Marvels is a 2023 Marvel Studios film that acts as the sequel to the film Captain Marvel (2019), a continuation of the television miniseries Ms. Marvel (2022), and the 33rd film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The film was written and directed by Nia DaCosta, and it stars Brie Larson, Teyonah Parris, Iman Vellani, Zawe Ashton, Gary Lewis, Park Seo-joon, Zenobia Shroff, Mohan Kapur, Saagar Shaikh, and Samuel L. Jackson.
Kamala meet Goose, Goose meet Kamala.
After Carol Danvers (Larson) destroyed the Supreme Intelligence, the artificial intelligence that led the Kree empire (back in 2019’s Captain Marvel), a Kree civil war broke out on the planet Hala. The Kree home world is left barren as it loses its air, water, and sunlight over the next 30 years. On a barren moon, the Kree’s new leader Dar-Benn (Ashton) discovers one of the two legendary Quantum Bands. These were previously used to create a network that allows fast travel across space, and Dar-Benn uses it to forcibly open a new, unstable jump point. The resulting anomaly impacts the entire jump point network, including one near the new S.A.B.E.R. space station run by Nick Fury (Jackson). Captain Monica Rambeau (Parris) is sent to investigate the jump point near S.A.B.E.R., while Carol investigates the new one that Dar-Benn opened.
Now meet the “real” Goose.
Meanwhile on Earth, Kamala Khan, a.k.a. Ms. Marvel (Vellani), is doing what she does best, writing fan fiction of her time as a superhero and dreaming of one day meeting Captain Marvel. Unbeknownst to her she’ll get her chance very soon. When Carol and Monica touch their respective jump points, Rambeau is transported to Danvers’ location, Kamala Khan—who has the other Quantum Band on Earth—is transported to Rambeau’s location, and Danvers is transported to Kamala’s house. The three use their different light-based powers to fight off Kree enemies, leaving the Khan family home destroyed. They soon deduce that their powers have become entangled somehow, which means that they switch places every time one of them uses their powers. This “team” will need to learn to work together to untangle their powers and stop Dar-Benn from tearing more rifts through space.
Kamala also wears white high top chucks with print uppers.
The star of this movie is Iman Vellani. She injects so much life and character into Kamala Khan that she will always be the highlight anytime the MCU puts her on screen. From her facial expressions to her chucks, you always know who Kamala is and she is always true to herself. Brie Larson is also so much fun in this movie. The creative decision for her to be a cold amnesiac in her first movie was baffling and is the cause of much of the hate she has recieved over the past five years. They are now leaning much more into Larson’s actual personality and it is so much better. She is able to convey so much more warmth while also staying strong and commanding.
Ladies and gentleman, The Marvels!
Kamala plummets to Earth in her customized print high top chucks.
The best chucks scene in this film is after the dust has settled from the first big fight scene. The Marvels have learned that their powers are entangled which leads Monica and Fury to head down to Earth to formally meet Kamala. Kamala has changed out of her Ms. Marvel costume and red low top chucks into her street clothes and white high top chucks. She geeks out over Fury, Monica, and the S.A.B.E.R. file they have on her. She tries to use her powers and more entanglement shenanigans occur between the three Marvels, including a sequence where Kamala switches with a flying Carol. Because she can not fly, Kamala is sent hurtling toward the Earth only to be saved by Monica. This scene is so much fun and that is due in large part to Vellani. Seeing Kamala interact with her hero in her chucks is also so cool.
Kamala and Monica end up switching onto a Kree warship.
