The squad is tight-knit as they spend an evening at John’s house.

There is an old saying that it is never too late to find your true calling. Sometimes you don’t find your purpose until you reach your forties. However, it can be hard to really go for what you want when that time comes because you are so set in your ways. The Rookie is a police procedural dramedy that explores what happens when you take the chance that a whole new life is waiting for you on the other side. The series stars a wonderful ensemble cast that includes Nathan Fillion, Alyssa Diaz, Richard T. Jones, Melissa O’Neil, Mekia Cox, Lisseth Chavez, Titus Makin Jr., Shawn Ashmore, Jenna Dewan, and Eric Winter. As of this writing, the show has aired for seven seasons and 121 episodes on ABC.

Lucy arrives home after a tough day.

John Nolan (Fillion) is a 45-year-old, newly divorced man living in rural Pennsylvania when he aids the local police in foiling a bank robbery. Realizing he is lost in his current life, he decides that helping people as a policeman may be his new calling. John learns that the LAPD runs a program that helps train new officers over the age of 37 and moves out West to join the academy. Nine months later, John has graduated and is now the oldest rookie on the force. He is assigned to the Mid-Wilshire Division where he is trained by newly promoted training officer Talia Bishop (Afton Williamson).

Halloween is underway here as Det. Cox’s kid Lyla wears chucks.

Leading the charge in the Mid-Wilshire precinct is Sgt. Wade Grey (Jones). He is initially very skeptical of Nolan, believing he is just doing this as some sort of mid-life crisis and that he doesn’t have what it takes to be a cop. He eventually comes around and becomes one of Nolan’s closest friends. Others in power at the station include Officer Tim Bradford (Eric Winter), a strict, no-nonsense training officer, and Angela Lopez (Diaz), an LAPD detective. They both have rookies of their own. Lucy Chen (O’Neil) is an ambitious rookie who struggles to prove herself to Officer Bradford. She is a 29-year-old who wears chucks and tries to stay true to herself while also making her name in a field her parents remain opposed to. There is also Jackson West (Makin Jr), an eager rookie assigned to Det. Lopez. He is the son of Commander Percy West (Michael Beach), head of the LAPD's Internal Affairs Division, but hopes to emerge from his father’s shadow. All these officers and detectives must navigate the dangerous, unpredictable nature of their jobs while aiming to protect and serve all the residents of Los Angeles.

Lucy wears multiple pairs of chucks across the show's 171 episodes.

This show offers a look at what a world with good, honest police work looks like. The main characters in this show embody what cops should be through their good-natured and honest drive to help those they serve. It’s a world that we will hopefully see someday, but until then, it is a good representation of what we as a society should strive for. The aforementioned cast is great and the main reason why this show has aired for seven seasons on network TV. Their relationships, chemistry, and interactions make the show super fun and enjoyable to watch. Fillion is one of the most underrated actors of his generation and is effortlessly charming and emotional in the role of John. Another standout is Melissa O’Neil as Lucy, who brings such fire and life to the character that she steals every scene she is in. Overall, this is a great network procedural that is perfect for your next binge-watch.
