“Señorita” by Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello

Camila Cabello split from the group Fifth Harmony back in December 2016 and she hasn’t looked back since. She released her debut album, Camila, and it spawned the two mega hits “Never Be the Same” and “Havana”. Shawn Mendes has released hit after hit since making his debut in 2015. Those hits have included “Stitches”, “Treat You Better”, “There's Nothing Holdin' Me Back”, and “In My Blood”. When you put these two superstars together and you have what is maybe the most popular duo in pop music. The song “Señorita” is the precursor to new music for both these artists, as they both have albums in the works. It was released on June 21st, 2019, and at the time of writing, is rocketing up the charts. It was immediately accompanied by a music video featuring the two young stars, and it’s left fans eagerly waiting on the edge of their seats for an album release date.

The song is a true blue duet between Cabello and Mendes, and their vocals pair perfectly together. Cabello’s voice is soft and sultry and Mendes croons in a way that makes the listener feel the longing in his voice. The lyrics refer to an ambiguous relationship that is full of lust and wish fulfillment between lovers. The music is very bare bones, mostly comprised of acoustic guitar from Mendes. This is appropriate since the focus of the song is the chemistry between Camila and Shawn, but considering the Hispanic background of the two artists, some more Latin instrumentation would’ve been welcomed.

The music video begins with Shawn Mendes pulling up on a motorcycle to a diner where Camila Cabello works as a waitress. Her uniform is a classic pink waitresses dress and white low top chucks with her hair up in a loose ponytail. This gives Camila that classic “girl next door” look, and that look pairs really well with the “rebel without a cause” look that Shawn Mendes has going on. They catch each other's eye at a party later that night, and the rest of the video is filled with their hot and steamy romance. They travel from dancefloor to motel room, until Shawn takes her back to the diner and leaves, presumably to continue with his life as a bike riding wanderer. They both look somewhat heartbroken after they part, and it’s these scenes that give a bittersweet meaning to the songs lyrics.
