“Glad You Came” by The Wanted
The Wanted is a British-Irish boy band consisting of group members Max George, Siva Kaneswaran, Jay McGuiness, Nathan Sykes, and Tom Parker. The group was formed in 2009 and immediately signed a worldwide contract with Universal Music, Island Records, and Mercury Records, and got world famous agent Scooter Braun to manage them. The group released their self tilted album the next year and had a steady stream of hits in the UK over the next few years, with 2011’s “Glad You Came” being the band’s big crossover hit. The song peaked at number one on the UK Singles Chart and also topped the charts of Ireland, Japan, and Venezuela. In North America, the song reached number two in Canada and number three in the United States.

Band member Tom Parker said of the song, “We all felt it was a new, refreshing sound and a perfect song for the summer which really gets you in the mood for a party.” The song is incredibly upbeat and combines dance and boy band pop really well. The song’s not very deep, as it’s really just a dance track with some lyrics about dancing with someone tacked on. The boys never really harmonize on this track besides the chorus which is odd considering they are a boy band, but it doesn’t take away from the song at all.

The music video was directed by Director X and was filmed in Ibiza, Spain. It follows the band living their best lives on the beach, in a club, and at a houseparty. Each spends the video with an individual woman, dancing, partying, and singing to them. According to Jay McGuiness, “The theory of the video was take The Wanted to Ibiza and just film everything and then just cut bits that were useable. But the girls were models, they weren't just girls we picked.” However, Max George later admitted: “Actually no, the girl I had to spend time with was just literally picked up off the street after a night out.” Whatever the case with the girls, one thing that wasn’t just picked off the street was the chucks on The Wanted’s feet. Both Max George and Nathan Sykes wear chucks in this video, Max a white pair and Nathan a blue pair. This all results in a video that’s fun and shows the party atmosphere the song is trying to create.
