“Best Days” by Alessia Cara

Alessia is as always incredibly raw and emotive with her performance on this track. She has the incredible ability to make you and your emotions feel seen through her lyrics. Her voice is vulnerable but so strong and it just gives this weight to her storytelling. The song is a stripped-down piano ballad that’s about Alessia’s fear that her best days have already occurred and that the future will never live up to them. This is a fear that so many of us can relate to and so many of us struggle with on a daily basis.

The music video begins with Alessia showing some guests the door after what looks like a nice party. As the song begins, she slowly makes her way through her apartment to a seated position, where she finishes the first verse. As the chorus comes in, she stands in front of a screen playing home videos, which fits well with the song’s theme about viewing the past. A puff of smoke covers her face and she now appears to be in some sort of waiting room. This whole sequence features Alessia’s chair moving towards the camera as the camera continuously backs up, creating a really cool visual effect. Another puff of smoke and now Alessia’s holding onto a balloon and floating into the clouds. She lets go and is back in her childhood room with what appears to be a younger version of herself. We see more home videos before Alessia is now in a field wearing black chucks. She launches into the air and hangs there for a bit as the chorus slows. Suddenly the whole video rewinds as Alessia is now back at the party surrounded by her friends and smiling. This video is a really great visual telling of someone reminiscing about the past while being wary of the future.
