The G.O.A.T. debate in hip-hop is never ending and contentious. There are so many viable candidates from old school artists like Rakim and KRS One, to 90’s stars like 2Pac and The Notorious B.I.G. to artists from the new millennium like Jay-Z and Kanye West. Two artists undeniably in this conversation amongst the greats are Snoop Dogg and Eminem. Their careers have crossed paths before but they’re back for a brand new collaboration. Their song “From The D 2 The LBC” was released on June 23rd, 2022 and was accompanied by a music video promoting their NFTs.
These guys sure look bored.
This song is all about Snoop Dogg’s favorite “herb” and the effects it has on both the rappers. Em displays the incredibly technical and fast rap style he’s adopted since 2013’s “Rap God” and Snoop actually speeds up his style to match. It creates a very impressive and boppable track and while it’s something new from Snoop, for Eminem this style is getting very tired at over ten years old. Here’s hoping he can evolve at this late stage in his career.
Snoop’s Bored Ape character wears chucks like him.
The video begins with Snoop and Em in the studio, with Em in the vocal booth and Snoop behind the controller. Snoop is engaging in his favorite pastime while Em is trying to lay down his verse. Snoop’s ensuing cloud of happiness gets into the booth and starts to affect Em. He starts hallucinating as the music kicks in and the rest of the video is a psychedelic trip. Em and Snoop transform into their NFT “Bored Ape” personas which is honestly a bit cringy but it is what it is. Em and Snoop rap in what appears to be Em’s home studio in Detroit while animated segments are stitched in with a lot of the scenes taking on a comic book style visual. The video ends with Eminem closing a literal comic book about their adventures and realizing he is still hallucinating. The whole Bored Ape thing is going to date this video terribly and also will turn a lot of people off to it. This won’t enter the music video pantheon for either of these two G.O.A.T.’s but the collaboration does provide hope that maybe they may make more music down the line.
