Billie Eilish has risen to incredible levels of superstardom over the past few years, which may surprise many due to the dark, alternative aesthetic of the 20-year-old singer-songwriter. Most wouldn’t hear her music and think “mega pop star”. However, with her ethereal soprano and unabashed confidence, she has become one of the biggest stars in pop music. Along with her producer/brother Finneas O’Connell, Eilish’s whispery vocals have brought her hits like “Ocean Eyes”, “bad guy”, “when the party’s over”, “you should see me in a crown”, and the Academy Award-winning “No Time to Die”. The song “TV” is one of two singles off her surprise second EP, Guitar Songs. Released on July 21, 2022, the song was first performed live a month prior to that on Eilish’s world tour. Eilish released this song now rather than waiting for her next album due to the song's timely lyrics and message.

The song is a minimalistic ballad that pairs Eilish’s soft vocals with a simple acoustic guitar played by Finneas. This is a throwback for both Billie and Finneas as they wanted to evoke their early music that was created at their parents’ house. This simple accompaniment really highlights Eilish’s vocals and her lyrics, and both are stellar. The song is about many topics and kind of acts like a stream of consciousness by Eilish. It opens with a description of a depressive episode, then goes into failed relationships and friendships. She also laments on society’s obsessions with celebrities, noting that people obsessed about the Johnny Depp vs Amber Heard trial while Roe v. Wade was overturned. She ends by repeating the phrase “maybe I'm the problem”, blaming herself for the life issues she has faced.

The music video is a live performance of the song in the Cloud Forest at the Gardens by the Bay nature park in Singapore. Eilish and Finneas collaborated on the film with the country’s tourism board after her tour’s Asian leg. The video sees the pair seated on stools in the gorgeous conservatory. Surrounded by incredible plants, Finneas gently strums a guitar while Billie holds the mic, wearing black chucks with a simple wardrobe. This fits with the stripped-back approach to the song and video. The video closes in on the pair as the performance goes on, eventually pulling back and giving a gorgeous view of the flora around them. This is a very bare-bones video that fits well with the music and lyrics, and showcases why Billie Eilish has “it”.
