This summer has definitely been the summer of Barbie. The iconic toy has been a staple in the childhood of young kids everywhere for over six decades. The most popular doll ever made, Barbie changed the toy industry and children’s playtime forever when she was introduced in 1959. In the summer of 2023, she made her live-action film debut in Greta Gerwig’s Barbie, starring Margot Robbie in the titular role and Ryan Gosling as Ken. The film dominated the summer box office and when it was released the same day as Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer it became a cultural phenomenon. This created a renewed interest in all things Barbie, including the 1997 Eurodance hit “Barbie Girl” by the Danish-Norwegian pop group Aqua. The song has been a mainstay in pop culture since its release and when Barbie came out it was renewed again as a hit.
Tori V is a Barbie girl in red high top chucks in this video.
Tori V is an American social media star and singer-songwriter who released her own version of “Barbie Girl” in 2017 and it immediately went viral with over 57 million views on YouTube. However, during this past summer of Barbie, the song exploded in popularity now having over 313 million views as of this writing. Tori’s version differs slightly from the original Aqua version, with changed lyrics and an added rap being the biggest changes. However, the upbeat dance-pop sound remains unchanged and her voice is perfect for the track. The song is a social commentary on the image of Barbie as plastic perfection, all while being incredibly catchy, bubblegum pop.
Let me see you one, two step.
The music video begins with a young girl playing with a Barbie doll in her room. When she places the doll down, magic occurs, and the Barbie doll comes to life in the image of Tori V. Tori and the young girl head outside and meet Ken, who is waiting in the Kenmobile. They ride off to a day full of fun that includes a party poolside and a dance party on the street. When we get to the dance party on the street, Barbie Tori changes from her pink dress and heels into a pink jacket, short shorts, and red high top chucks. Barbie in chucks is a match made in heaven honestly, and it’s a look that the actual doll could and should take some inspiration from. It’s a great look merging two iconic brands together. The rest of the video sees Tori and other Barbies playing with the kids and having a great time. It’s a fun video and a great cover that really captures the Barbie energy that was so beloved in the film, and Tori somehow managed to be six years ahead of the curve on it.
Life in canvas, it’s fantastic!
