Joshua Bassett is an American actor and singer who is best known for starring as Ricky Bowen in the Disney+ show, High School Musical: The Musical: The Series. From Oceanside, California, the 20-year-old actor has also been part of several TV shows and films. He’s also been the subject of plenty of tabloid fodder, as he is reportedly the subject of Olivia Rodrigo’s mega-hit single “driver’s license” and his conversion to evangelicalism has been a hotbed of conversation. Through it all, Bassett has also been releasing a steady stream of music, with four EPs since 2021, and his debut studio album, The Golden Years, on July 26th, 2024. The song “Feel Something” is a non-album single he released in 2021.
Josh wears black high top chucks and his friends wear white high top chucks in this video.
“Feel Something” is an upbeat, teen anthem that is all about how great it is to be young and alive. According to Bassett, the song is an amalgamation of different stories of when he and his friends just “had a blast and went wild and really felt life.” This makes sense considering the health scare he suffered prior to the song’s release, as he nearly died from septic shock and heart failure. Such a traumatic event like that would leave anyone feeling like they need to feel something, let alone a 21-year-old with his whole life in front of him.
Sometimes “feeling something” means juggling.
The music video follows the theme of enjoying life while you’re still young. Josh and his friends spend a day doing all the young people things like dancing in random places and laughing a lot. This brought to mind that in the past few years, a niche genre of video has formed in the pop space. This usually stars a young pop singer surrounded by “friends” while the video tries to convince you that they are having so much fun despite not really doing anything. Josh and his friends don’t do anything besides “hang out” and all that entails is laughing at nothing. Josh seems like a nice, chucks-wearing kid, but this video gives no insight into his personality, which seems to be the goal.
A human totem pole of kids wearing chucks.
