“January Eyes” by Elijah Woods

Elijah Woods x Jamie Fine was a Canadian pop music duo that consisted of songwriter and producer Elijah Woods and singer-songwriter Jamie Fine. The duo was the winning group on the first season of the Canadian reality music competition, The Launch. They then had a good run of successful releases including the single “Ain't Easy”, which became certified Double Platinum by Music Canada and topped the national Adult Contemporary chart. They easily became the best-selling artists of the show, releasing another three gold-certified singles and receiving several awards and nominations, including Best New Canadian Artist or Group at the 2018 iHeartRadio MMVAs. However, despite all this success, the pair went their separate ways in 2020 to explore singles careers and new opportunities. “January Eyes” is the latest single from Elijah Woods that debuted on September 27th, 2024 and it is the third single and fifth track of his upcoming EP, Hey There Elijah.

January Eyes still 1

Bats in the belfry is one thing, but I’ve never heard of chucks in the rafters.

The song has such a vibe of loneliness and longing for someone who has left you behind. Woods describes this love as a warm, shining light in the darkness saying, “You felt like mid-July to these January eyes”. This is a clever and vivid analogy that paints a great picture of someone who is cold and shut off from the world until they see this lover. It also is very easy to then see why he would be hung up on losing them after what seems like such a long time later.

Elijah Woods wears black high top chucks in this video.

The music video begins with Elijah Woods sitting in the rafters of what looks to be an abandoned barn. As his legs dangle we see he is wearing a pair of black high top chucks. He eventually comes down and croons against the wall of the barn as the sun goes down and the sunlight flickers in and out between the boards. This is a cool shot at first but the blinking soon becomes too much and you begin to feel blinded by a large blinking light. The disorienting feeling is continued when Elijah begins to flash between environments at rapid speed, such as an empty field, a busy road, a still boat, and an abandoned bridge. Each flash comes with a wardrobe change sans chucks which always remain, as Elijah holds a lying down position. This is until Elijah rises and walks away through a field into a sunset in his chucks. While some of the visuals may be a little disorienting, the music video does a good job of conveying the loneliness and continued yearning that is the focus for much of the song.

This position and his chucks never change in this montage of quickfire shots.
