Billie Eilish has only been a name in pop music for nine years since she released her 2015 single “Ocean Eyes” at the incredibly young age of 14. Since then she has reached the top of the music world with three hit albums, multiple top 10 singles, 9 Grammys, and 2 Academy Awards. It feels like she has done everything possible and she is still only 22 years old. Her latest album, Hit Me Hard and Soft, has continued her success with the smash hit “Birds of a Feather”. The song served as the second single from the album and has reached #2 on the Billboard Hot 100. Eilish previously performed the song as part of the closing ceremonies for the 2024 Olympics, and on October 19th, 2024 she performed it on Saturday Night Live. This coincided with the launch of her first collaboration with Converse on the Converse By You x Billie Eilish collection and proved to be the perfect occasion to show off her new chucks.

This track is a breezy, new-wave track that features immaculate production from Finneas. This is paired with Billie’s light and airy vocals that sound like an actual feather falling to the ground. She sings about falling in love with a person that she wants to "stick together" with. This love she feels for her significant other brings her to tears and she begs her lover to stay and never end their relationship. This is something she never thought she would experience and it truly feels like a new beginning to her.

The performance begins with the camera directly beneath Billie as she stands amongst the clouds. She is wearing her own custom chucks from her Converse By You x Billie Eilish collection which was released a few weeks before her SNL appearance. The soles say “Hit Me Hard and Soft”, which is the name of her latest album. Once she gets to the chorus, she steps down off the pedestal and the camera shows that her brother Finneas is performing on the guitar next to her. The biggest takeaway from this whole performance is Billie’s stage presence. She is captivating as she performs and her angelic vocals mesmerize. It feels ethereal and it truly is something that only a few artists can accomplish. This is definitely one of the better performances we’ve seen on SNL in recent times just because we are seeing an already great artist truly enter their prime.
