Elijah Woods X Jamie Fine was a Canadian pop music duo that consisted of songwriter and producer Elijah Woods and singer-songwriter Jamie Fine. The duo did what most artists struggle to do by finding immediate success. Sure they had some help in notoriety winning the first season of the Canadian reality music competition, The Launch, but they managed to transfer that fame into a slew of successful releases. This included the single “Ain't Easy”, which became certified Double Platinum by Music Canada and topped the national Adult Contemporary chart. They continued releasing music, including another three gold-certified singles and received several awards and nominations, including Best New Canadian Artist or Group at the 2018 iHeartRadio MMVAs. However, despite all this success, the pair went their separate ways in 2020 to explore singles careers and new opportunities. “Lights” is Elijah’s very first single as a solo artist and his most successful to date. It went Gold in Canada and peaked at #47 on the Canada Hot 100 after its 2021 release.

This track is similar to a lot of the other tracks that Woods released post-split with Jamie Fine in that it focuses on heartbreak, presenting a sensitive, sad boy image. It follows the post-break-up stress that comes when you realize your ex is moving on, specifically seeing the lights go on at her house. The track has that generic, standard pop kind of beat and melody. If you think of any boiler-plate pop song of the last ten years you know what I’m talking about.

The music video begins with Elijah sitting on a chair that has been set up in a makeshift living room outside. He is wearing low-top, worn-out black chucks that have the words “lights out” written on the side of them. Woods then turns out the lights by turning on the lamp next to him and the mood shifts as he falls deeper into despair. His makeshift living room joins a dirty mattress in the back of a U-Haul truck. He moves through the dark streets as he continues singing the song, sparsely lit by lights. Visually, it is almost like he is haunted by the lights, which fits really well with the chorus as he wonders why her lights keep coming on.
