There is a new wave of pop singers rising to the forefront of mainstream music. Conan Gray is an American singer-songwriter and former YouTuber from California who is one of these new pop stars. From his internet beginning uploading vlogs, covers, and original songs to YouTube as a teenager, to singing a record deal with Republic Records in 2018, Gray has carved out a nice path for himself in the evolving pop world. He released his debut EP, Sunset Season, in 2018, and since then he’s had hit songs "Maniac" and "Heather". His studio album Kid Krow (2020) debuted at number five on the U.S. Billboard 200, making it the biggest U.S. artist debut of the year. He is also known for his friendship with Olivia Rodrigo, frequently showing up on her social media. The song “The Story” was the fourth single off Kid Krow and was released on January 10th, 2020.

Conan has always maintained that he is a storyteller in his songs and this track really plays into that idea. Gray opens up about his difficult childhood in the third person perspective, opening up about his issues with bullying, abuse, and self-hatred. The slow-tempo and intense lyrics create such a personal vibe that it almost makes you feel as though you are being invasive listening. It’s a raw and powerful story to tell.

The music video begins with Conan wandering through a barren landscape alone, in chucks. He hitches a ride in the back of a pick-up truck and is taken to some abandoned-looking houses. Here he performs the rest of the song in solitude amongst the wilderness and empty homes. The general vibe of this music video is isolation. Gray feels incredibly alone in this vast landscape and abandoned buildings, and this sense of loneliness really vibes with the melodramatic lyrics and personal subject matter. The setting feels like a place where you would let your mind wander and admit the dark truths about your life, and that is what it feels like Conan is doing here.
