Alexander Warren Hughes is an American singer-songwriter that originally began his career as a comedy YouTuber. Up until about two years ago, he was regularly posting the standard reaction, lifestyle, and clickbaity YouTube slop a lot of creators are known for. Then in a rather abrupt 180, he began releasing serious music that doesn’t have much of a connection to his previous content. Now two years later, he is finding some mainstream success with hits like “Before You Leave Me”, “Save You a Seat”, and “Carry You Home”. The song “Chasing Shadows” is one of his earlier songs and was released on December 2nd, 2022. The music video has amassed over 3.7 million views since then.
Shadows are a big visual theme in this video.
The song details the feeling of trying to make someone proud when they have left you. The singer talks about missing someone and seeing their shadow getting bigger as the sun goes down. Warren then says he feels he is chasing these shadows, knowing he will never reach them but unable to let them go. The chasing shadows lyric paints a cool visual picture in the mind especially as we all know how shadows can scratch and “reach out” in ways that can create a sense of longing. Alex has a pretty good voice and fits into that Lewis Capaldi-style vocal range that fits these kinds of songs well.
Alex Warren wears black chucks in this video.
The music video begins with Alex walking into a dimly lit room. He is wearing black chucks that match his all-black attire and the dark setting, letting us know that the mood is not great here. He begins singing the song when the room shifts to having hundreds of red roses planted in the ground, with Alex crouching in the middle of them. Midway through the video, it begins to snow in the room and Alex’s feet are covered. Then, color finally enters in the form of a rainbow spotlight that illuminates Alex in a new light. The video ends with Alex floating above the snow pile, casting his own shadow. This video appropriately creates some pretty cool visuals with shadows such as the aforementioned stretching effect on the field of roses. It is clear from both the video and song that Warren has something and he could become a big star in the next few years without question.
It is unclear if wearing chucks makes it easier to chase shadows.
