The Kid LAROI is an up-and-coming Australian rapper and singer-songwriter. He first came to fame as a friend of the late rapper Juice Wrld and for his appearances on Juice’s Australian tour. Starting small and slowly growing his audience to an international base, LAROI has really come up over the past four years, truly breaking out with his 2021 #1 collaboration with pop superstar Justin Bieber, “Stay” and the non-album single “Thousand Miles”. His song “Not Sober” is from the deluxe version of his debut mixtape, F*ck Love, and was released in 2021.
The Kid LAROI and others wear chucks in this video.
On this track, The Kid LAROI, Stunna Gambino, and Polo G talk about their history of difficult relationships and the bad experiences in their lives. All three share the common theme of often having to fall back on drugs and alcohol to cope with the pain they have. They’d rather go through life “not sober” than face their terrible pasts and uncertain futures. This theme is relatable even for those who don’t fall into the trap of alcohol and drugs. We’ve all hit that point in our lives where it’s all too much, and we think it would just be easier to disassociate for a while.
The light fixture and blue walls create a cool visual here.
The music video begins with LAROI and Stunna posturing in front of a New York City project with a large group of people. LAROI looks so incredibly out of place, although according to him he grew up in similar places in Australia. However, the veneers, long blond hair, and immaculate outfit do not tell that story, and the Red Solo Cup is trying way to hard. The multi-color chucks he is wearing are a nice look though. The video also includes LAROI rapping on top of a building in Los Angeles with Polo G, which feels a lot more real. There isn’t much else to say about this video. It’s a pretty straightforward rap video where the artists rap while gesturing at the camera. It has nothing to do with the song and there is no overarching narrative.
The red cup is just too much.
