Parody music is an incredibly difficult genre to master. You have to really toe the line between comedy genius and absolute cringe, and often you’re gonna fall into the cringe category. There are of course a few exceptions, most notably Weird Al Yankovic. In the summer of 2024, the world was introduced to the new voice of comedian Kyle Gordon with the release of his mega-viral hit “Planet of the Bass”. The track was a parody of 90’s Eurodance music and launched a million tweets, memes, and an incredible full-length music video, but it really succeeded because it was also a banger. Now Gordon has released a new parody song of a completely different genre that also hits the perfect notes titled “We Will Never Die”. The song was released on February 12th, 2025, and will be a part of Gordon’s forthcoming album, Kyle Gordon is Wonderful.
Who’s ready to stomp and clap in their chucks while chanting “Oh-Oh-Oh-Oh”?
While “Planet of the Bass” perfectly captured the breaking beats and broken English 1990s Eurodance, “We Will Never Die” takes aim at the quirky, indie pop of the early 2010s. We’re talking about acts like fun., Mumford and Sons, The Lumineers, and Jason Mraz. The kind of music you would hear in a department store or a car commercial aimed at hipsters in their 20s. There are banjos, xylophones, and a breakdown on the bridge that is too good to describe. It is honestly so accurate in its mimicry that you will forget it is a parody and not the big hit from some random band you haven’t heard of since 2011.
The black high top chucks really add to Audrey Trullinger’s hipster outfit in this video.
The music video opens with an incredible shot of Gordon wearing the most 2010s hipster outfit to ever exist while standing in front of the Manhattan Bridge in Brooklyn. Quirky animations are flying across the screen as he does his best to be as “free” as possible until he is joined by his merry band of hipsters. They dance and play fun instruments in the park while Kyle reads Toni Morrison on a bench. Suddenly, his dream girl (played by Ms. Biljana Electronica herself, Audrey Trullinger) sits next to him in her beanie, teal glasses, and chucks. They fall in love while completing a checklist of every video cliche the genre has to offer, and the video ends with everyone dancing like they’re in an anti-depressant commercial. If you grew up in the 2010s, this video will gnaw at you as you try to remember where you’ve seen it before. It’s perfect and I can’t wait till it closes out YouTube Rewind 2011.
