“idk i just work here” by Durry

We have all had that one job that really truly just plain old sucked. There’s nothing you can do to make it better, for reasons far beyond your control this job is beyond saving. It sucked long before you got there and it’ll suck long after you leave. In times like these, the only real option is to just show up and get through it the best you can. And when something inevitably goes wrong, and a customer asks what you are doing to solve it, all you can say is “I don’t know, I just work here.” The indie rock band Durry knows this feeling all too well as their brand new track “idk i just work here” sums up life at a dead-end job.

Service with a smile!

Durry is an American indie rock band from Burnsville, Minnesota that formed during the 2020 COVID Pandemic. Austin Durry had moved back home to live in his parents’ basement after being a semi-successful musician for twelve years. He reconnected with his younger sister Taryn, and they started bouncing music ideas off each other until those ideas turned into this band. They found success with their viral hit “Who's Laughing Now” and are now on the cusp of releasing their latest album, THIS MOVIE SUCKS, and embarking on a national tour. The song “idk i just work here” lyrically recounts the frustrations with working a job for minimal pay, you really couldn’t care less about. They even worked in the “If you’ve got time to lean, you have time to clean” line.

The music video opens with Austin Durry wearing a pizza costume and spinning a sign to come over to Papa Durry’s Pizza. There is absolutely no joy behind his eyes, so he is perfectly capturing the vibe of the song. He and the rest of the band are all working at this pizza place, and they all engage in the menial tasks that come with working in the service industry: serving food, dealing with terrible customers, cleaning bathrooms, and taking orders. All of this is done with a smile that screams, “I do not care”, which works with the biting lyrics. Austin is wearing black high top chucks throughout this, adding to the relatability of the video, and the catharsis when he and the other workers eventually snap and truly stop caring. We have all been at that point in a service job where you really wanted to stop caring, and this video going there is greatly appreciated.
