“Giver/Taker” by Kacey Musgraves and FINNEAS

Kacey Musgraves has come a long way from finishing seventh on the USA Network singing competition Nashville Star. Upon being eliminated way too early, the country singer from Golden, Texas, would sign with Mercury Nashville in 2012 and release her solo debut single “Merry Go ’Round” that same year. This led to a string of hits including “Follow Your Arrow”, “Biscuits”, “Space Cowboy, “Rainbow”, and “I Remember Everything”. Her song “Giver/Taker” is from her latest album, Deeper Well. For this performance, she joins FINNEAS, the superstar producer and brother of Billie Eilish, for his Apple Music Nashville Session.

The theme of this song is loneliness, specifically the loneliness that comes when you give everything to someone and they don’t reciprocate. Musgraves paints a complex picture of an unequal love affair. She offers everything her partner wants from her, and wants the same in return. However, the relationship isn’t working for either of them, but they both desperately need the commitment that comes with love. This is a very nuanced portrayal, and will definitely resonate with many who are givers in love with takers.

The music video begins with Kacey and FINNEAS discussing smashing guitars, and they both are very anti. The idea of destroying something that someone else can make something with doesn’t sit right with them. The backdrop and their wardrobe are this mish-mash of golds and browns, except for FINNEAS’ black high top chucks. This color palette fits both of their vocal styles and gives the whole video a warm feeling. They then get into the song, both of them playing acoustic guitar. Kacey takes the first verse, and they harmonize on the chorus. Their voices fit so well together. FINNEAS then takes the second verse and sings it at a much lower pitch than he normally does, which is unexpected but works exceptionally well for this country-leaning song. They wrap it up with some more Johnny Cash and June Carter-like harmonies, and finish with a high five. It’s a video that puts the focus on two amazing artists, and that is all it needs to be.

So many warm gold tones to go with their warm voices.
