“CUDN’T B ME” by Jessie Reyez

Perhaps the best word to describe Canadian singer-songwriter Jessie Reyez is authentic. Her crooning and raspy voice has evoked emotion like no other since her debut, and her stripped-down style of tees and chucks has told everyone that she is unabashedly who she is for every performance. Raw and full of emotion, her songs have garnered her a rabid following and have helped her top the charts in numerous countries. After a three-year hiatus, Reyez has returned with a new album full of emotional songs. “CUDN’T B ME” is one of those songs and brings about more feelings of love and heartbreak that the artist is known for.

Jessie Reyez returns in her black high top chucks.

This song is a lament of love that was never really worth your time. Jessie paints a picture of a lover who settled for someone she could never be: docile, obedient, and lenient with being hurt. She tells how he is out in the suburbs cheating on this woman he doesn’t really love, looking for the one he let go. Jessie has clearly won in this scenario, as she clearly knows that it “cudn’t b me” in this scenario because she wouldn’t allow it. The song ends with a phone call from Sam Smith where he reinforces the themes of the song, hyping her up and letting her know that this guy will never get over her.

Reyez’s yellow shirt and the set’s blue background match the color scheme of her new album.

The music video opens with a close-up of Jessie sitting with a mic in her hand. She is sitting cross-legged while wearing a yellow shirt, black ripped jeans, and her usual black high top chucks. Her yellow shirt stands out amongst the set that is draped in velvet blue fabric. She is joined by her band as she croons. She eventually stands, but the focus for the majority of the video is Reyez and her vocals, which is the right choice. This is an artist who always puts the focus on her emotions and lyrics, and performing some big dance routine or high brow concept video would be inauthentic. She is a person going through emotional trauma, and the only way she can deal with it is through music. That is what this music is about, and it’s a good voice. The video ends with answering the phone call from the song, and we get some great facial reactions from Jessie. This is another solid video in her catalog, and it’s great to have her back after so long away.
