FINNEAS is an American singer-songwriter, record producer, and actor who many know as the producer and brother of pop star Billie Eilish. However, this undercuts his immense talent, and FINNEAS is easily one of the smartest producers in music today. Whenever he goes into his process and the thought put behind the music he creates, it’s apparent he is an incredible musical mind. This is why he has been able to find so much success, including ten Grammy Awards, two Golden Gloves, and two Academy Awards for Best Original Song. Outside of his work with Billie, he has also worked with Drake, Kid Cudi, Nicki Minaj, Selena Gomez, Camila Cabello, Demi Lovato, Halsey, Justin Bieber, Karol G, Girl in Red, Rosalía, Tove Lo, Ringo Starr, and Tate McRae. His own music has also garnered a lot of praise and attention, with his 2018 song “Let's Fall in Love for the Night” being his biggest solo hit. The song “Cleats” is the second single from his second studio album, For Cryin’ Out Loud, and was released on September 13th, 2024.

This song tells a love story that sees the narrator deal with his love seemingly being on a different path than he is. The titular cleats are in reference to the cleats his love would wear on the soccer field, which seems to be a core memory for him. The image of her in cleats also brings back the nostalgia of that unrequited love. It’s also clearly the moment he fell in love in the first place, and the idea of her moving on without him through life is leaving him feeling a bit broken.

The music video begins with Finneas appearing as a miniature version of himself. He watches what appears to be his younger self with the girl in cleats. Mini Finneas is wearing black low cut chucks, but besides the aforementioned cleats, we don’t really get a good look at the past him. This may represent that this memory is a bit blurry, but certain things are crystal clear, like the cleats. Eventually, the past Finneas kisses the girl, but she walks away. During the outro, he watches her play soccer, and we get this very real sense of emotional distance. He’s clearly still holding on while she is moving on. The girl’s cleats and their memory are really all he has left.
