Scarlet Rae is a Los Angeles-born, New York City-based artist who started releasing solo tracks back in 2020. Her music blends understated acoustic instrumentation with shoegaze gloom and whispery, effect-shrouded vocals. A move from California to Brooklyn in 2020 enabled Rae to creatively refresh. Lower rents and the isolation provided by Covid-19 lockdowns led her to begin focusing on material she hadn’t had the time to pursue previously. Her latest track is “Call Off The Day” and was released September 18th, 2025.

The song sounds like it came straight out of the 1990s. It’s got that alt-rock, slightly grungy sound, and Scarlet’s vocals are very reminiscent of Alanis Morissette, although the song is a lot more mellow than some of Alanis’s most iconic songs. Scarlet also has this very vulnerable quality in how she sings, and that adds another layer to her vocals. This is one of those songs from a lesser-known artist that you’d hear and hopefully think to yourself, “I want to hear more”.
Scarlet walks away after her day is called off.
The music video begins with Scarlet walking into the food court of a mall while wearing some striking purple high top chucks. She’s got a bag of Chik-fil-a in her hands, and she chows down as she checks her phone. We see her texts, and it appears that she was called into the mall on her day off by her boss. However, upon sitting down, her boss informs her she is no longer needed, thus meaning her whole day has been called off. She does a Charlie Brown walk through the streets as she figures out what to do with the rest of her day. She ends up sitting on a dirty curb and gets rid of her work uniform, but keeps her purple chucks on. We also get some shots of her performing with her band. Scarlet has a great presence about her, and that is what is carrying this video. As she’s a smaller artist, this was never going to be a massive production, but that is perfectly fine for her. This video is real and gets the job done
