Bon Iver is an American indie folk band founded in 2006 by singer-songwriter Justin Vernon. Yes, you read that right, Bon Iver is a band, not just one guy. This may be news to anyone unfamiliar with the group, as you may have seen just Vernon appearing on features with artists like Kanye West, Beyoncé, Taylor Swift, and Zach Bryan. Outside of that, they have released five studio albums, two of which have gone Platinum. Their latest project is SABLE, fABLE, is a mixture of dark and light tones, telling a complete story across its nine tracks. Vernon stated that the album has a prologue-and-book narrative with the first chapter, SABLE, carrying a noticeably sadder tone and reflecting on the past. In contrast, the second chapter, fABLE, represents his journey forward, embracing change and doing whatever it takes to find happiness.

“Bon Iver auditions” is a bat signal for white guys with beards.
The track “Day One” is the fourth track off the album and features vocals from Dijon and Flock of Dimes. The song is a somber reflection on a relationship where Vernon seems to be struggling to be on the same page with someone important in his life. The vocal harmonies from Vernon, Dijon, and Flock of Dimes, along with the instrumentation, give some gospel vibes. It’s a very powerful combination of lyrics, vocals, and music, and one of Iver’s best.

This young girl is one of the focused auditions, and she wears black platform chucks.
The music video begins with a title card that says that Bon Iver has announced his retirement, and a replacement needs to be cast in the role. A whole line of Bon Iver-looking dudes is queued up down the sidewalk in LA, hoping to be the next Bon Iver. We then see a bunch of people throughout the audition process of all shapes, sizes, races, and genders, with many of them wearing chucks. We also see some famous faces among the hopefuls. Cristin Milioti, St. Vincent, and Jacob Elordi, in an incredible fake beard, try to be the next Bon Iver. The track’s featured artists, Dijon and Flock of Dimes’ Jenn Wasner, also try out, and even Justin Vernon himself attempts to get his role as Bon Iver back. This is a very fun video, and everyone in it seems like they are having a good time and bringing their own performance style to the song.

Bon Iver, if it were a band from a Disney Channel show.
