Alessia Cara has proven to be one of the brightest and best-selling musicians of her generation. A gifted songwriter who, at the age of 29, has already released four critically acclaimed albums. Her hits include “Here”, “Wild Things”, “1-800-273-8255”, “How Far I’ll Go”, and “Trust My Lonely”. After a four-year hiatus, she returned to music in early 2025 with a brand new album, Love & Hyperbole. Her song “Growing Pains” is one of her best tracks and is the lead single from her sophomore studio album, The Pains of Growing. It was released on June 15th, 2018, and later that year she performed the song live at Austin City Limits.

Alessia Cara and her band perform on Austin City Limits in black chucks.
The lyrics of “Growing Pains” discuss the inevitable loss of innocence and the universal struggle of growing up. This makes sense coming from Alessia. After her debut single “Here” was released when she was only eighteen, she was immediately cast into the adult world of fame. This age period is difficult for anyone as you transition from teen to young adult, but especially so when you have a top ten song and everyone is psychoanalyzing your lyrics while calling you lame for not liking parties.

Black chucks and a suit are a classic combo.
This music video was filmed on Austin City Limits back in 2018, a few months after the song’s release. ACL is both an annual music festival held in Austin and a PBS music program produced by Austin PBS. This was during Cara’s “big suit era” and features her wearing her oversized suit with black chucks, a look she wore exclusively during this time. For this performance, her backup dancers and band also don the suit look (albeit a bit more relaxed) with matching black chucks. The performance is pretty straightforward, which is expected since Cara has always been a songwriter and vocalist first. The suit and chucks do seem to have given her more swagger, though, and her confidence during this performance is great. This was Cara’s debut on this historic program, and she knocked it out of the park.

Hard not to have aura when you're singing in a suit and chucks.
