Gracie Abrams is surprisingly divisive. You wouldn’t think this would be the case, considering her style of music is softly-sung indie pop. However, that is exactly what divides listeners the world over. To her fans, she’s one of the best songwriters going and speaks for a generation of young girls. To her detractors, she’s a cringey nepo baby that doesn’t have a particularly great voice and writes bland lyrics. The truth is, like most online disagreements, probably somewhere in the middle. Yes, her dad is mega-director J.J. Abrams, and the visuals that have accompanied her music may induce a rolling of the eyes, but there is no denying that her lyrics and music have struck a chord with many young women. Her song “Risk” was the first single off her second studio album, The Secret of Us, and was released on May 1st, 2024.

The song features Abram’s typical jittery and breathy vocals over a strumming guitar melody. The structure of the song is a good example of Abram’s signature energetic ballads, where she sings an upbeat song like it’s a heartwrenching ballad. This particular song is about Gracie’s infatuation with a man she has never met, but she sings it like a breakup song. She outlines the risks associated with pursuing this feeling and mentions how, no matter what, she wants to be in a relationship with him.

In the music video, Gracie seems to be stuck in a loop between the real world and her dreams. Throughout the video, Gracie slowly becomes more “love drunk”, which is portrayed by her drinking more wine and acting erratically. She also spends a lot of the video following a faceless male figure. We only really get a good look at his chucks, but all we need to know is that Gracie is obsessed with him, so much so that she is wearing the same chucks he is. In previous songs, she has described how she used to drive to her lover’s house but never went in. This time, though, things are different. Elated with the feeling of love and breaking free from all the anxiousness and self-doubt, she crashes a birthday party and causes a scene. This “wakes her” from her love-drunk stupor, and she goes her separate way from the mystery man, rejoicing in her newfound freedom, showcased by the fact that she is no longer wearing chucks.
The mystery man goes left, and Gracie goes right, ending her pursuit of him.
