“I Want You Back” by Victoria Justice

Kids who grew up watching Nickelodeon remember when Victoria Justice debuted as the new student at Pacific Coast Academy in Season 2 of Zoey 101. She played aspiring actress Lola Martinez, and she was a fan favorite on the show. This led to excitement when it was announced that she would be getting her own musical comedy show on Nickelodeon, Victorious. Victorious was big and is beloved for its wacky characters and musical numbers. Many of these musical numbers became singles that Nick would release, one of which is the song “I Want You Back”. The song was released on August 2nd, 2011, a few days after it premiered on an episode of the show.

“I Want You Back” is the debut single for the legendary Jackson 5, and was originally released on October 7th, 1969. It’s iconic and one of the most recognizable and beloved pop songs in history. It has been covered numerous times in the last 60 years, including by Cleopatra and, most recently K-Pop group twice. To an entire generation, though, the version recorded by the cast of Victorious is a bubblegum pop version of the song. The cast is full of amazing singers like Justice, Leon Thomas, and Ariana Grande, so their version, while aimed at kids, still sounds incredible.

This was not what you usually think of when you picture “time in jail”.

The music video is straight from the show’s one-hour special titled “Locked Up!” that premiered on July 30th, 2011. The episode sees Tori Vega (Victoria Justice) win a free vacation for herself and her friends to a fictional country called Yerba. Being Victorious, the trip goes horribly wrong when Tori accidentally strikes the Yerbanian chancellor in the eye with her shoe, resulting in her being sent to jail. When Tori's friends try to get her out, they get locked up as well. This leads to Tori and her friends performing “I Want You Back” for the Chancellor in an effort to win their freedom. Their prison garb is classic orange jumpsuits, with everyone wearing the shoes they came in with. This means Tori is wearing white chucks, while Beck, Trina, Jade, and Robbie wear black chucks. At the end of the performance, the prisoners all escape, and the gang heads home. The idea of performing a Jaskcon 5 song in chucks and prison garb for the chancellor of a foreign nation in order to gain your freedom is such a ridiculous concept, and it’s why Victorious was such a massive hit.
