Karlee Tanaka first came to the limelight as a contestant on “The Debut: Dream Academy”, the reality competition led by Hybe and Geffen to find members for the international K-Pop girl group, Katseye. On the show, her bright personality and wonderful voice stood out. She was a big fan favorite, which is why her early elimination due to outside factors was so heartbreaking. Even the other contestants were vocally upset by her elimination. However, many knew that her talent would one day win out, and since then, she has found her own voice and path. Under the stage name KARLEE GIRL, she released her debut single in April, 2025. Her latest single is titled “Right Back!” and was released independently on March 13th, 2026.

“Right Back!” is an upbeat, bouncy pop song that fits really well with Karlee’s bubbly vocals. She went on to explain the song’s meaning in an Instagram video, stating that she “was born and raised [in Honolulu, Hawai’i]. There was a phrase, and kind of almost slang term, that we would use whenever someone had a shitty moment in their life, like, if they broke up with someone, if they failed the test, or lost the game… Anytime any setback happened, we would always be like, ‘Right back, right back!’”. This phrase takes on a deeper meaning when you consider her journey with Dream Academy and being an independent artist in the wake of that. She is on the bounce back, making her own way through the music industry, and “gettin’ right back, right back”!
It wouldn’t be a music video in LA without chucks and a pool.
The music video opens above a picturesque, suburban household in LA. In the backyard, Karlee is hanging out with a group of her friends, some of whom are wearing chucks, which fit in with the sunny setting. They lounge around the pool as Karlee starts doing some very snappy choreography, including her taking a fall on the front lawn as part of the routine. Back by the pool, Karlee is joined by her friends in the choreography. They close out the video dancing in the street together as the sun sets behind them. This video is mostly just a showcase for Karlee’s infectious personality and dance skills, and it succeeds at that mission.
