When you see the title “High School Musical: The Musical: The Series”, you may be inclined to ask what in the world does that mean? Is this a musical or is it a show? The answer to both those questions is yes. The original High School Musical film series began in 2006, and it was an instant phenomenon. Some fifteen years later, viewers returned to East High School but in a brand new way: through a streaming series. The series featured an ensemble cast including Olivia Rodrigo, Joshua Bassett, Matt Cornett, Sofia Wylie, Larry Saperstein, Julia Lester, Dara Reneé, and more. The show premiered on November 8th, 2019, and ran for four seasons on Disney+.

A key aspect of the show was that it is a musical, and that meant that there was one or two performances every episode. In the first season, this primarily revolved around songs from High School Musical, but as the show went on, songs from the wider Disney canon ended up being performed. This included the song “It’s On” from Camp Rock 2: The Final Jam, which is a song about getting ready for a competition.

This music video comes from Season Three of the show, which takes place at theater camp. In this episode, a color war begins, and the campers are split into two teams: the blue team (E. J., Ricky, Ashlyn, and Gina) and the yellow team (Maddox, Kourtney, Carlos, and Jet). The campers compete in games and competitions throughout the day, while all the usual teen drama of the show hampers some of the main characters. The day concludes with a sing-off performance of “It’s On”. The two sides are obviously dressed in yellow and blue outfits, respectively, but all the campers are wearing matching chucks to go with their outfits. This outfit choice fits with the brand of the show, which is selling that classic American teen look for their main stars. With “It’s On” originating in the Camp Rock franchise, the camp setting for this performance really fits well, and the lyrics match the vibe of the competition. The differentiating colors offer some interesting visuals, but the performance is like many of the performances in the show in that it focuses on its ensemble cast rather than on big set pieces. The yellow team ends up winning the competition, and the kids work to resolve their ongoing drama.
