“Bellyache” by Billie Eilish

Billie Eilish has risen to incredible levels of superstardom over the past decade, which may surprise many due to the dark, alternative aesthetic she debuted with. Most wouldn’t have heard her music and thought “mega pop star”, but she went above and beyond that status while constantly evolving. She has won ten Grammy Awards and two Academy Awards for Best Song, all before the age of twenty-four. Along with her producer/brother Finneas O’Connell, Eilish’s whispery vocals have brought her hits like “Ocean Eyes”, “bad guy”, “when the party’s over”, “you should see me in a crown”, “Happier Than Ever”, and “Birds of a Feather”. The song “Bellyache” is the second single off her 2017 debut EP, don’t smile at me. Released on February 24th, 2017, the song went double Platinum despite never cracking the Billboard Hot 100, and has remained a staple of Eilish’s touring sets.

This video almost has a Technicolor grading to it.

“Bellyache” is a midtempo electropop song with some R&B and hip-hop elements. It has influences of hip hop, deep house, and Latin in the instrumentation, which gave Eilish’s early work this ethereal macabre vibe. Like any all-time great artist, you can define Eilish’s eras by the sound of her music, and this being one of her first singles, it is distinctly part of her early sound that she became synonymous with. Lyrically, the track sees Billie tell a fictional story about murder from the perspective of a psychopath who regrets being a psychopath but doesn’t really care. The song focuses on themes of guilt, summed up by the line—“I thought that I’d feel better, but now I gotta bellyache”.

Billie’s chucks contrast well with the road and her yellow outfit.

The music video begins with Eilish walking down a long, empty desert road somewhere in the Mojave Desert, dragging a red wagon filled with garbage bags. The sky is a shade of purplish-blue, while the sides of the road are marked with cacti and sand. Eilish is dressed from head to toe in a yellow ensemble, with some white chucks, all of which contrast the blue and brown scenery. She eventually reveals that the wagon is full of cash, and begins to recount all the bad things she’s done. Eilish then throws dollar bills in the air and dances along the highway. All this hammers home the theme of the song perfectly.
