The Beaches are a Canadian rock band composed of sisters Jordan (lead vocals, bass) and Kylie Miller (guitar, backing vocals), Leandra Earl (keyboards, guitar, backing vocals), and Eliza Enman-McDaniel (drums). The band was formed in Toronto in 2009 by the sisters and has had a steady rise since. The band released two EPs before signing to Universal Records, and then, in 2017, they released their debut album Late Show, which led to the band winning the 2018 Juno Award for Breakthrough Group of the Year. The second album, Blame Brett, was led by the hit single “Blame Brett”, which reached number 1 on the Billboard Canada rock charts and was the band’s breakthrough single in the United States. The song was released on May 5th, 2023 and ended up going Gold in the US.

The song is all about Jordan Miller's prior relationship with Brett Emmons of The Glorious Sons. However, many took the title to assume that Emmons was the “bad guy” in the relationship, which led to Miller having to clarify that the song was not meant to be perceived as attacking him, but as an apology to future boyfriends for her own struggles to commit to a new relationship. She has since stressed that she is the “bad guy” in the song, not Emmons, and has spoken out against fans who tried to vilify Emmons based on the song. This is one of those classic cases where fans don’t quite see the areas of gray that lie within relationships and don’t actually listen to the lyrics of a song.

The music video opens with the band prepping and tuning their instruments for a performance of the song in an all-white studio setting. We then get a close-up shot of guitarist Leandra Earl’s black high top chucks that she has paired with striking red pants. The band performs in this liminal space for a while before the video then moves on to what appears to be a dingy afterparty. The dark atmosphere and shaky close-ups contrast with the bright wide shots of the first setting. This is a pretty standard video and doesn’t have any particular connection to the lyrics of the song, but the band clearly has chemistry and performs like they’ve been doing this since they were young.
