Sandra wears very festive and sparkly black high top chucks.
The Santa Clause film series has become a staple of annual Christmas viewing. The three movies are uneven in terms of quality, but they’ve given audiences the wish fulfillment of what it would be like to be Santa Claus and run the North Pole. Flying the sleigh, working with elves, and even riding reindeer are all things this series has shown us and it is all magical. However, after the 2006 release of The Santa Clause 3, there was a sixteen-year wait before we got to travel to the North Pole again with Scott Calvin. However, that changed with 2022’s The Santa Clauses, a Disney+ show that brought back the original cast and continued their story. Now Season 2 is here just in time for the holidays and it stars Tim Allen, Elizabeth Mitchell, Austin Kane, Elizabeth Allen-Dick, Matilda Lawler, Devin Bright, Ruby Jay, Rupali Redd, Gabriel “Fluffy” Iglesias, and Eric Stonestreet.
Cal’s girlfriend Riley also wears chucks during this season.
This season opens immediately following the conclusion of Season 1. Scott (Allen) has once again taken over the role of Santa, but he now wants to make it into a family business. He names Sandra (Allen-Dick) Keeper of Creatures because of her ability to talk to animals. Carol (Mitchell) volunteers to lead the E.L.F.S. (Effective Liberating Flight Squad) and becomes the lead detective for the North Pole. Scott then decides that he will train Cal (Kane) to take his place as Santa and it’ll start right now. However, Cal is much more interested in his new girlfriend (Jay) and secretly doesn’t think he is really cut out to be the next Santa.
A passing of the mug moment.
Elsewhere at the North Pole, Head Elf Betty (Lawler) is forced to go on Kribble Krabble, the year-long period where elves must experience the real world to decide if they will stay elves or not. Her husband Noel (Bright) is named Head Elf in her absence, and he is very unsure that he can both lead the North Pole and clash with his best friend Scott. In Chicago, a man named Kris Moreno (Iglesias) runs a failing theme park, Santapolis, where he tries to bring the Christmas spirit year-round. However, the shabby conditions leave many people wishing that a miracle could befall the park. Finally, there are rumblings that someone named the Mad Santa (Stonestreet) may return and exact his revenge from when he was ousted hundreds of years ago.
Sandra meets La Befana to master her newfound witch magic.
This season does feel like a step down from Season 1. The first season had a spark because we were returning to this whimsical world after sixteen years away, but this season falls short of catching that same feeling. The overarching threat of the Mad Santa is a nice idea, but he is always treated as more of a joke rather than an imposing threat. However, his sidekick Olga is amazing and she steals every scene she is in. Gabriel Iglesias is a welcomed addition but his role is very disappointing. He doesn’t really contribute much to the plot and is used more as a background character than the third lead. The side plots of Cal not really wanting to be Santa and Sandra learning how to control her powers are nice but they also don’t do much to push the story forward. The season is only six episodes so there isn’t enough time to explore what these plotlines are trying to get to. Instead, by the finale, they just end and nothing has changed. Scott suddenly doesn’t want to retire anymore so he doesn’t need Cal to take over and Sandra kind of has a hold on her magic but she still has a long way to go, which is no different than the first episode. The final “battle” between Santa and Mad Santa is also incredibly anticlimactic as he just gives up and decides to perform at the Santa theme park instead. Overall, it’s a perfectly fine Christmas show to put on this season, but I don’t think this will go down as a classic.
Merry Christmas to all and to all a Happy Birthday!
