Joshua Bassett is an American actor and singer who is best known for starring as Ricky Bowen in the Disney+ show, High School Musical: The Musical: The Series. From Oceanside, California, the 20-year-old actor has also been part of several TV shows and films. He’s also been the subject of plenty of tabloid fodder, as he is reportedly the subject of Olivia Rodrigo’s mega-hit single “driver’s license” and his conversion to evangelicalism has been a hotbed of conversation. Through it all, Bassett has also been releasing a steady stream of music, with 4 EPs since 2021, and his debut studio album, The Golden Years, on July 26th, 2024. The song “Smoke Slow” is the third single from his third EP, Sad Songs in a Hotel Room, and was released on August 12th, 2022.
A literal smoke show of fire and cigarettes starts the music video.
The track is about trying to savor a moment and trying not to lose the spark between two people. There is a pretty poignant moment of reflection that all things end and that he knows in the end she will only be with him for a short period. This is why he hopes that they take their time and smoke slow. This is a good concept that is executed very well by Bassett with some well-written lyrics and very good vocals.
Joshua tries to savor the moment in his black high top chucks.
The music video is very low key and acts as a slow burn itself. It opens with a message again stating that Joshua is against smoking and that this is strictly for narrative purposes. He then smokes a cigarette while chilling next to a bonfire wearing chucks. He looks eyes with a pretty girl across the room and she becomes his focus for the rest of the night. They talk, dance, and share a cigarette as the party goes on around them. We basically see everything they do together and how they spend the next morning in the kitchen reminiscing about the night before. However, we learn at the end that this didn’t actually happen as Josh was left alone by the bonfire all night and that girl was with someone else. She leaves and he is left alone. This twist at the end actually fits the message of the song perfectly, as we see how much the connection meant to Josh and how he was truly savoring it. However, he was so lost that he didn’t actually go make the moment happen.
Joshua keeps his chucks close as he dips his feet into the pool.
